- A solid state relay(SSR), in comparison to a mechanical relay, is actually not a relay at all. There are no moving components inside to switch power to and from the load. This is managed by the SCR, triac, alternistor, or other semiconductor device in the output of the SSR. And although the primary function of switching power to and from an electrical load is the same, several significant advantages are gained by using a solid state relay(SSR) instead of EMR's.
